Dance in the summer? Who knew? I just spent the whole year dancing; shouldn’t I take a break?
Maybe. Maybe not. For many, dancing during the summer might be new. Summer is often filled with a lot
of traditional activities like camping, fireworks, and baseball. But dance, too? You bet. Here are five
reasons why summer dance is a home run.
Summer dance is the perfect time to try a new class. The shortened schedule allows for dancers
to experiment without a ton of commitment. Trying new classes gives dancers the option to explore new
movement styles, meet new people, and experience different styles of music and teachers. Because of
the interrelated nature of dance technique, trying new styles is more than just fun. It often helps us to
strengthen and reinforce what we’ve learned all year in our preferred discipline.
Just like adding a class helps us to strengthen our technique, dancing during the summer just
makes us strong, period. The continued physical activity paired with a mental break from school helps us
to grow, focus on, and connect more with our bodies. Dance is all about repetition. By continuing on a
progressive training schedule, dancers can prepare for fall stronger and better mentally primed for a great
One of the best and most helpful things about summer dance is the continuation of a healthy
physical routine. While we all need a break from some things, often the physical activity associated with
dance can combat boredom, promote a healthy mental state and provide students with a safe social and
creative outlet. Additionally, maintaining some semblance of a positive routine can make the back to
school transition easier.
Without the pressure of choreography and recital routines, summer is a great time to focus on
skill building. This is particularly important for dancers who appreciate a bit more repetition, a more
personalized approach and more 1:1 time with their teacher. Additionally, dancers who are looking for a
more challenging environment focused on their growth and development will benefit from the small class
sizes and variable pace of class as a result. Regardless of your goals, due to the smaller class sizes
typically associated with summer classes, dancers can count on a lot of love from their teachers.
Finally, summer dance is fun X100! I am so passionate about summer dance because many of
my best childhood memories were made at the dance studio over the summer. It’s a bit more relaxed,
and the focus can be placed totally on fun.
